Web/Mobile App Critique

Hello everybody! Today I will be reviewing the web app of Hulu.

Usability

The app is very usable not having too many flaws on the technical side. The app and website are not prone to many crashes and when there is one it is very rare and does not happen often. Everything is also done through a secure network meaning the information that you enter will not be stolen. When you go on the website for the first time it will walk you through how to log in or create an account and sign up for its service. Once that is done it will ask for shows, movies, and genres that you like to set up a homepage, and after that, you can start streaming.

Design

The app's design takes Netflix's inspiration just like all of the other streaming apps that came after it. It has this cozy black and green feel and has simple enough buttons to understand what exact pages you are going to. At the top of the page, you will see the buttons Home, TV, Movies, News, My Stuff, Hubs, a Search Icon, and an icon for your profile. At the bottom of the page is your personalized homepage with shows that will be tailored to the recommendations you have selected. When you select something to watch all you need to do is press play and you are watching that show or movie.  The UI design is a great and simple one that users can learn and get used to very quickly because of the similarities and familiarity with many other services.

Functionality

This website's functionality is great because of the UI design and usability that it has. The actions that you do are snappy and not flashy. It is also pretty straightforward which means you can get to what you want pretty quickly and fast. It also tells you when you need to add on to your subscription or not when you go to a part of the site you don't have access to. They make sure that you know what you're doing at every corner even if the settings are really simple to understand. Even though it can feel the same at some points, the website functions exactly like you would expect it.

One of the recommendations I have for the app is to make it feel more unique. It is good to have a design that feels familiar to others, you also need a design that makes you stand out and includes more color or more flashy things to bring people in. Another recommendation is to make sure every version can keep up with the superior Web and Mobile versions. And one final recommendation is to simply continue improving the website to make the experience more enjoyable.

This app if I was able to give it a score will be an 8/10. It is very simple, usable, functional, and has a great design. But at the same time it doesn't feel different it feels like the same old same old just like Netflix. It doesn't have anything unique going for it other than the green color scheme. But either way, It is an example of good design and app development and will continue to be used by millions each year.

Thats all for this post, have a nice day!
